The age in your eyes
Tells me that you have seen how the world revolves
You know how the seasons change, how the green withers,
And how joy does not always come in the morning
You know how you can wake up to bleak days
And have hopelessness stifle your breath, a ball in your chest
How terrifying dread can seize you, seep right through you,
taking possession of your limbs, lips, legs
Paralyzing. You cannot move
You know the pace at which tear drops fall
Slowly, marking lines on your cheeks
You have seen elusive peace
And how happiness can dissipate right before your watch
When they look at you and say you look older
They should know the things you know.
