Light - Rutger Kopland

This evening I would like to say a few things
while actually there are no things to express them

such as light -- would like to explain
what light is before death
takes us off in the night

into the night as I try
to think you and me back
together this evening --

but look at the glasses in our hands
filled to the brim filled with light

to Tom van Deel, Dutch academic, poet and critic, on the occasion of his fiftieth birthday.
