The Vowels: An Enigma - Jonathan Swift

We are little airy creatures,
All of different voice and features;
One of us in glass is set,
One of us you ’ll find in jet,
T’other you may see in tin,
And the fourth a box within;
If the fifth you should pursue,
It can never fly from you.

Jonathan Swift (1667–1745) Ireland

  1. Former high school English teacher turned homeschooling mother that runs a Charlotte Mason Co-op and also teaches Sunday School- just recently discovered this gem with my daughter. Vowels are often despised in the English classroom, because, well, they can be quite the Enigma. Something about the great vowel shift and whatnot. I like this poem because it breaths some life into that and makes me smile. Thanks for sharing!
