Where somebody drew a flower - Miriam Calleja

In winter, these rock dwellings
take on a different slant.
In winter as you walk, if you
take care not to slip, you arrive
at a rock placed by giants,
where somebody drew a flower.

When it rains, as the sea beats against shore,
clay cliffs weep
and your ears are full of wind,
if you arrive at that rock
before anyone else does
we can pretend to be those same giants.
In a peaceful cacophony of sea-spray
clay slowly sliding
only here, like this, I’ll tell you I love you.

Miriam Calleja (born 1982) Malta
Translation by the author of ‘Xi ħadd pinġa fjura’ – a poem originally written in Maltese
