Daniel’s song - Mihaly Babits

Despite all Thou hast remembered me, God,
and Thou hast found all those who have long been
in search of Thee and all those who love Thee.

Thou who tooks the young prophets by the forelock
hast brought in their hands figs and dates to me,
hast brought them to my cage in Babylon.

Profess therefore, oh Clarity and Darkness,
the name of the Lord! Profess him, wastes and rivers,
and ye wise whales all all that swim in the waters!

Give me some pitch, some tallow and some hair
and I shall kill the dragon without weapons,
the ornate monster that ye call your god,

But I shall not harm the lion who does no harm
to me. I shall go back to him by nightfall
to sleep in the savage body’s furry warmth.

I shall hear his huge heart throb and the earth
shall throb with it, and heaven too – and I
shall sleep there, rocking like a babe of God.

Mihaly Babits (1883 - 1941) Hungary
Translated by István Tótfalusi
