Her Song - Epiphanie Mukasano

the song of my mother's hand stirring sorghum pap
tastes like the morning sun; a song echoed
among the leaves of her cassava tree; a prayer, a murmur
climbing Rutare mountains

in the evening, this song will become the moonlight
fora long forgotten child whose tongue at last is
able to exclaim 'Mama!', suddenly melting away
a stone of accumulated grief
